Dear lytu:
You brought up a rather difficult question, becasue the word is
archiac.
This word is not in the set of jianti (simplified) word list, currently
in use. It is not in the 'official' dictionary Xinhua Zidian at all.
The word appears in some of electronic dictionaires (such as
wiktionary) , where the word is given worng pronunciations
and wrong definitions. It is not pronunced as 'rang', and it
does not mean 'fine clothes.'
The word means 'bulkiness' as in 'bulky clothes; it is pronunced
as 'nong' - same as the sound of 'nong' (farmer).
I show here the word
with appended pronunciation given in the bopomofo system.
As I said, the word is not in use much; but it is listed in the older,
better dictionaries.
The earliest citation of this word is in Confucius' Shi Jing (Book of
Odes), Volume 1, Chapter 24, line 1.
You can see it at this website at
http://www.chinapage.com/poem/shijing/gb/2.htm
Scroll down to Chapter 24.
Hope this will answer your query. BTW, where did you come across to
this word?
Ming

Ming is correct:
According to Wieger's Etymological Dictionary, it is 'nung2' (nong) with the meaning of 'coarse clothes'!
(Even!) good old Mathew's doesn't have it.
Wenlin dictionary does have it - but wrongly as '*fine* clothes' (which obviously doesn't go together with the phonetic which is 'peasant').
Thanks to Ming!

There is another citation containing this word: Luo Shen Fu
See
http://www.chinapage.com/poem/fu/luoshenfu4.html
Unless you know how to use the 'search' function, read the
text carefull to find the word.
