Dear Sir,
I must congratulate your contribution on what is China and its greatness by showing these materials of ancient and modern China to the world through the website.
However, I just wonder whether ShanHai Jing is a book of any value. If so, can anything be shown on this.
Thank you. |

Dear ptuan:
Re: Book on Mountains and Seas.
Glad to have you join us. I hope you will visit often and share with us your comments and research on ɽº£¾ and other topics.
Shanghai Jin is indeed an important book on Chinese geography. It is sadly neglected by many.
I have it at this web site 'China the Beautiful', so you can find the full text by going to:
http://www.chinapage.com/big5/big5-literature.html
From this page, you can navigate to the book.
Or, from the Home Page, you can scroll down to the 'literature' and click on that button.
The digitization of this and other great literature was done by Mr. Wu Hengsheng to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude.
Hope to hear from you again.

Dear Sir,
ÎÒÕÒµ½ÁË¡£ лл¡£
Þ©½ü£¬ÓÐÒ»±¾¹ØÓÚɽº£¾µÄÊé¡£ The author interprets the animals and the setting in the book were about people from outer space. They were forced to land in order to repair or to do research of this great land of China.
What do you think or have you seen the publication of this book.
Thanks |

I believe the 'people' described in Shan Hai Jing are the totems of the tribes rater than description of the real people. That would be a better interpretation. _________________ SL Lee

I have been thinking and wondering how certain books no matter how weird produced in the west are very popular, the book such as Harry Porter and the Star War I to III.
In certain country there is a study to show the acceptability of the book on the Journey to the West much superior than Harry Porter is less popular in comparison. The finding is that Harry Porter is much read by the younger generation of even the Chinese race.
I was even discouraged to show the pictures of all kinds of creatures in ShanHaiJing to Chinese children yet the pictures of all the weird animals or celetial beings produced by the west are not objectionable for viewing and art models for the children. These weird creatures are even screened in cinema or theatres. Toys made in these images are also available easily in the supermarkets and toy shops.
Why this discrimination? I wonder.

There are several reasons for the Chinese novel less popular than the English ones:
1. Lack of good translation - Journey to the West is full of difficult literary terms, poems, etc. Few can translate them well. An abbreviated version may be more successful.
2. Lack of marketing - It takes a lot of marketing to push a movie or film or comic book. It takes time to establish a brand name for marketing. e.g. Disney, Nickelodeon, Batman...etc.
3. Cultural difference - US is the major marketer for cartoons and other children novels. There are also about 1 billion English readers in many countries. There are fewer Chinese readers among non-Chinese. Some of the stories require too much historical background to understand.
There are plenty of good Chinese novels that can serve as films and comic books. In fact, Nickelodeon has just made a cartoon series base on Asian theme - "Avatar". It is produced by two American illustrators/writers. Some of the plots are very similar to Journey to the West. I did the theme title and the Chinese translation for this series. It is a healthy animated series. There are 26 episodes, airing every Friday night (repeated also at other times).
