There are many words that were originally simple and made complicated later. When reverted to to the original, people think it is a simplified character 'invented' after 1950s.

There is a dispute about the carvings on an imperial message of Yuan dynasty. Because it uses 号 instead of 號, there was a doubt about its authenticity.

It would be clear if 说文解字 is consulted for the origin. 号 is the original word. It was later replaced by 號. This is China's first systematic dictionary, first compiled in Han dynasty about 100AD. It was revised many times throughout history with many scholars participated.
There is a photocopy of the Qing dynasty print.

The discovery of this Yuan relic has a very intriguing story

This 3-part video from youtube.com is about 120 minutes in total. It is much better than the film National Treasure. You wouldn't want to stop, once started watching. Make sure you have a good two hours without interruption.

Dear Siu-Leung,

you're right, of course:
(UTF-8 )
From 口 (kǒu) 'mouth' and 丂 qiǎo 'exclamation' (both phonetic and signific).
The full form 號 has 虎 (hǔ) 'tiger' added to convey the idea of a tiger's roar; but the simple form 号 is older!

Dear SL and Alfred::

You are right to point out that in some instances, jianti has fewer strokes than
its fanti counterpart. I can not get to the reference page given by SL so I
post it here.

chhoo:

We are talking about individual words here. The passages in which they
appear are not important.
