China had no high-rise buildings until recently. Now there is amad race to build and build!

When I was in Taiwan in 1949, the tallest building was 3 stories high.
Taipei now has the tallest building in the World - Taipei 101.

Shanghai's claim for the tallest building in the world is lost to Taipei. But it certainly has the tallest building in Mainland China.

Hong Kong use to have, and continue to have, more tall buildings than any other Chinese city.

Right now, the tallest building in Hong Kong is No. 2, International Finance Center. It has 88 stories and is 180m high. It also claimed to be
the third tallest in the World.

A new tall building, the Kowloon Transit Building, is currently under construction. When completed in 2007, it will have 111 floor and be 1,575 feet high. It will then claim to have one of tallest buildings in the world.
