Qingzang Railway - Qinghai-Tibet Railroad

A large section of the Qingzang Railway, between Golmud and Lhasa, has been completed, which measures 1142km.

The Ministry of Railway announced the completion of the 794 km section of the railway on Saturday.

The Golmud-Lhasa section measures 1142km.

Construction began on the section in 2001.

It will be completed this year and is scheduled to open to traffic in 2006.

Total cost of the section is 2.6 billion yuan, or over 300 million US dollars.

Authorities say the impact on environment during constuction has been minimised.

The Qingzang railway, when it is complete, will be the highest and longest route in the world.

QINGHAI-XIZANG RAILWAY TO BE COMPLETED IN OCT 2005

China plans to make an additional investment of 5.5 billion yuan in the Qinghai-Xizang railway line, so as to ensure the complete construction of the railway by Oct. 2005 and trial operation on July 1, 2006.

The 5.5 billion yuan would be used to complete pre-depot work, build railway tracks and beams, promote post-depot work in a comprehensive way and improve environmental protection work, stated Liu Zhijun, Minister of Railways, at today's Qinghai-Xizang railway construction project work conference.

By the end of 2004, the Qinghai-Xizang railway had basically completed construction of the main road base, bridge and tunnel infrastructure, completed 29 of the 32 difficult construction projects. Construction on the remaining three projects has progressed smoothly, namely the Lasa River bridge project, the Lasa railway depot project and the railway tracks and beams project. The Qinghai-Xizang railway would also use GSM-R digital wireless communications for the first time and has completed tests of network and terminal equipment. Last year, the Qinghai-Xizang railway built 396 km of railway tracks. And, investment in the railway reached 8.8 billion yuan last year.
