Asia Tsunami Death Toll May Pass 100,000

Each day the death toll goes up.

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia Dec 30, 2004 — Residents fled coasts in India, Sri Lanka and Thailand after warnings of possible new tsunamis Thursday, and pilots in Indonesia dropped food to cliff-ringed villages yet to be visited by outsiders four days after the quake-and-wave disaster. The Red Cross feared the death toll across 11 nations would top 100,000.

Death toll from tsunami disaster nears 120,000

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) - As the death toll from the earthquake-tsunami catastrophe soared to nearly 120,000, nations donated US$500 million (euro370 million) toward the world's largest-ever relief effort, but U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said even more would be needed.

US pledges $350m in tsunami aid

December 31,2004.

The US plans to boost to $350m the funds being made available to help survivors of the Indian Ocean tsunami which claimed more than 124,000 lives.
It is a ten-fold increase on an initial pledge attacked by critics as meagre. It is also the largest pledge so far.

The announcement came just before talks between senior US and UN figures on co-ordinating the foreign aid effort.

Asia Tsunami Death Toll Passes 150,000

January 8, 2005.

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia Jan 8, 2005 — Two weeks after a tsunami slammed into coastlines around the Indian Ocean, thousands of bodies were still being pulled out of the mud in remote villages, as the official death toll from the catastrophe rose above 150,000.

In a rare positive note, the World Health Organization said no major disease outbreaks have been reported in the crowded camps where millions have sought refuge after losing everything.
