" 汉奸?is/was a very serious accusation. Where and how does " 汉奸?this term originated? Does this term mean anything in today's China and to its people?

In the past, I have posted threads in a Chinese discusion site about human rights, corruption in China, and more. Most of them were not favour by number of readers. I quote" if you have left China, you have no right or what- so- ever to comment China." Some of them even called me " 汉奸?for I have bad-mouthed China and its people. Not long ago, I mention I want to learn Japanese and a cyber friend of mine said"你这个汉奸?

I don't feel I was offended by such term, I somewhat amused by the people called me with such term. After I read the article 二十世纪谁不是汉奸? written by 赵无眠 I don't think the term "汉奸?mean as much as back in the days in China.

Dear Ming and Shu Wen:

To be nitpicking, that's what one of my dictionaries tells me:

(hanjian) 11.1 average occurrences per million characters of text

There are terms like this also in German vocabulary (e.g. Vaterlandsverraeter, Nestbeschmutzer etc.) - yet, thank G-d, heard much less in modern times.

As it seems, Chinese language (e.g. that used by socker fans) actually does have a couple of 'hard' words ...

One should not be insulting when criticizing, but nevertheless take one's right (granted in most of the western countries) to name things how they are.

Hanjian, JiaYangGuizi, Maiban, YangNu are old terms to describe someone who betrayed China for his/her own benefit because he/she is knowledgeable in a foreign language to communicate with foreigners.

However, knowing a foreign language or learning one these days should not be taken as betrayal if the purpose is to facilitate communication between two countries for mutual benefit. There got to be someone who can understand the languages of the different parties.

Those who use the old terms to label people with multilingual ability are narrow-minded. However, that does not mean that there is no such thing as Hanjian. There are plenty. Some don't even don't speak well of a foreign language. Out of their own grudge or benefit, they try every other way to libel their own country.
