|
|
The Chinese society has well defined and detailed family relations.
As a start, there are 3 classes of relationships: 3, 6, and 9 "degrees."
San Zu (3) are father, sons and grandsons.
Liu Qin (6) are father, mother, brothers, sisters, husband and children.
Jiu Zu (9) or Nine Degrees of Consanguinity
Does anyone know the precise defintion of 'jiu zu'?
In ancient times, the penelty for the severest crime (e.g. to overthrow
the dynasty) can be death sentences for all members of a person's jiu zu.

I read the article and found...
| Quote: | | As far as the whole society is concerned, Liji (The Book of Rites)--a Chinese ancient document about ritual, provides that “The emperor’s room should be nine chi (1/3 metres) wide, the feudal barons’ seven chi, senior officials’ five chi, and the literati’s three chi.†|
Does this mean that the emperor's room had at least nine square meters (3x9 å°º)? And the literati's, say, about two or three (3 å°º x ?)?

I think it means the "maximum" width for literati's room should be 3 chi, and 5 chi for senior officail, 7 chi for feudal baron, and 9 chi for the empero.

the actual square meters depend on the _length_ too, don't they? Otherwise, a literati's room could be around e.g. 1 chi x 1 chi, which is hardly 1 square meter! So, is the measure in length a given unit that is not mentioned here??
